I oppose the "Readiness and Range Preservation Initiative". This Initiative, if made into law, would give the Department of Defense exemption from the Clean Air Act, the Superfund law, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. I am concerned about this initiative because the Military owns 25 million acres of land, and with exemption from these important environmental laws, it would endanger the critical habitat of 300 endangered species.

There are already many serious contaminants which are seeping from military lands, including perchlorate, which can affect a fetus and newborn resulting in delayed development and decreased learning capability. This highly toxic chemical has been found in ground water in over 22 locations around the country.

Congressional hearings indicate that the military will continue to be well prepared without these exemptions. I also believe that no branch of government should be "above the law." Please stand behind the five environmental acts that are now threatened and support sustainable and responsible development by opposing this initiative.
