Tell Congress The U.S. Military Has To Abide By Environmental Law! Contact your US Senators and Representatives immediately with the letter below. Please CALL or FAX your Senator immediately. (Snail mail letters are also good, but are delayed two weeks for irradiation when they are received). Senators' direct phone and fax numbers are available at www.senate.gov. This Initiative will come up for a vote in the US House of Representatives on May 15th -- we must act now! To find your Senator or Representative, go to www.congress.org and enter your zip code to locate your Congressperson. Click on the "info" link below the Congressperson's name to see their direct phone, fax and address. Sample Letter: Dear Senator __________ / Dear Representative ____________: I oppose the "Readiness and Range Preservation Initiative". This Initiative, if made into law, would give the Department of Defense exemption from the Clean Air Act, the Superfund law, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. I am concerned about this initiative because the Military owns 25 million acres of land, and with exemption from these important environmental laws, it would endanger the critical habitat of 300 endangered species. There are already many serious contaminants which are seeping from military lands, including perchlorate, which can affect a fetus and newborn resulting in delayed development and decreased learning capability. This highly toxic chemical has been found in ground water in over 22 locations around the country. Congressional hearings indicate that the military will continue to be well prepared without these exemptions. I also believe that no branch of government should be "above the law." Please stand behind the five environmental acts that are now threatened and support sustainable and responsible development by opposing this initiative. Sincerely, (your name) (your address) |
