Anishinaabe Niijii is organizing to protect the environment and build alliances of Native and non-Native people in support of Native treaty rights. Anishinaabe Niijii provides technical and legal support to Wisconsin Tribes in their efforts to resist wide-scale development of sulfur copper mining, oil & gas exploration, and high voltage transmission lines.
Midwest Treaty Network
Eau Claire, Wisconsin
The Midwest Treaty Network formed in 1989 in response to violence and racism against Anishinaabe attempting to exercise court-affirmed hunting and fishing rights in northern Wisconsin. This grassroots organization that has effectively coordinated state, national and international support for Native sovereignty and treaty rights. The Network educates the public about treaties, resource development, racism and environmental threats.
Native Community of Point Hope
Point Hope, Alaska
In the 1960's, unknown to the Inupiat Eskimos at Point Hope, the government conducted secret atomic experiments to learn how nuclear contamination spreads in an Arctic environment. The government dumped atomic nuclear debris from the Nevada test site and buried thousands of pounds of radioactive soil in the area. The Inupiat who live and hunt in the area were never told about the experiments until 1992. As a result of public outcry, including action cards collected on the Honor the Earth Tour, the Environmental Protection Agency ordered clean-up of the Point Hope Site in 1994.
White Earth Land Recovery Project
White Earth Reservation, Minnesota
More than 90% of the land on the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota is held by non-tribal interests, much of it lost through fraud at the turn of the century. The Recovery Project is focused on rebuilding the land base and traditional sustainable economies of the Anishinabe people and educating the public about environmental justice issues.
