Honor the Earth: Impacted Nations: a traveling art show: Artists: Kelly Church

Kelly Church, Anishinabe
Ms. Church is a fifth generation basket maker. She resides in Michigan where she carries on the tradition of the Anishinabe by using the Black Ash tree to create Black Ash baskets. The Anishinabe like to weave baskets that can be used in everyday life, as well as those for display. They harvest their own trees and prepare all materials by hand, using only an axe, a knife, and scissors as their tools. In an effort to keep the cultural art form alive for future generations, Ms. Church partakes in basket making demonstrations for museums, schools, and also holds classes to teach other interested Anishinabe. In addition, she is learning to save Black Ash seeds, in hopes of replanting them in the future.
