Jim Denomie, Ojibwe
Mr. Denomie was born in Hayward , Wisconsin , in 1955. From the age of five, he lived in Minneapolis , Minnesota , and returned to the reservation for summer and winter breaks to visit his grandparents. He became interested in art at an early age, always drawing and eagerly participating in art activities at school. During high school, however, a counselor talked him out of pursuing art school. He dropped out and gave up art for 25 years. In 1995, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with an art degree. Since then, painting has been his primary medium. He also enjoys exploring photography and printmaking. Presently, he lives in Schafer , Minnesota , and works as a drywall finisher. He is a husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather.
