Don Montileaux, Oglala Lakota
Born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, in 1948, Mr. Montileaux is a modern-day storyteller, rekindling images of the Lakota lifestyle by painting the people as they were. Primarily self-taught, Mr. Montileaux received formal training at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and interned under noted artist Oscar Howe at the University of South Dakota. His personal friend and mentor, the late Herman Red Elk, was also a primary artistic influence. Mr. Montileaux has received numerous awards and commissions throughout his career. In 1994, he was invited by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology to create a work of art that became part of the payload aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor the following year.
