Honor the Earth: Impacted Nations: a traveling art show: Artists: Dwayne Wilcox

Dwayne “Chuck” Wilcox, Oglala Lakota
Mr. Wilcox has been drawing since high school, although he didn't think of his drawing as “art” until a classmate complimented him on his work. Mr. Wilcox is a self-taught artist who has received guidance from other artists. He admits that it is hard to consider himself “self-taught” when he has learned so much from others and continues to learn everyday. Mr. Wilcox's drawings and paintings often depict pow-wows, people preparing for dances, families spending time together, and everyday scenes. His artwork reflects a contemporary way of life rather than the past. According to Mr. Wilcox, “I'm alive now. Our time is just as important as the past.” Mr. Wilcox was raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota . He currently resides in Rapid City , South Dakota .
