5th Annual Love Water Not Oil Horse Ride Tour
This past month we concluded our 5th Annual Love Water Not Oil tour. Our youth led us on a spiritual horseback journey for over 400-miles throughout the north country.
We rode along the proposed routes for Enbridge’s Line 66 from Nekoosah, Wisconsin, into the territory of Odaawaa-Zaaga’iganiig, the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation, then along the proposed route for Enbridge’s Line 3 from East Lake on the Mille Lacs reservation to Rice Lake Village on the White Earth reservation.
Let me tell you our story. On July 9, we began in Nekoosah, Wisconsin at the site of the 1500 year old Ho Chunk effigy mounds. Four-fifths of the ceremonial sites in Wisconsin have been destroyed, and we began our spiritual horse ride at these mounds, many of which will be destroyed if Enbridge is allowed to build new pipelines.
I had the privilege of riding with our youth. Riders from the Lakota, Dakota, Ho Chunk, and Ojibwe people rode together, most of them under 20 years of age. I cannot tell you how much pride I felt as an adult watching prayers, courage, and horsemanship in the next generation of leaders.
