Honor the Earth: Music: Concerts & Tours: 1993

In 1993, Honor the Earth sponsored its first tour. We held three shows in Madison, Wisconsin; Minneapolis, Minnesota and Des Moines, Iowa. The tour focused on the issue of radioactive contamination in the community of Point Hope, Alaska. It was here, during the 1960s, that the government buried radioactive nuclear waste from the Nevada test site on Inupiat traditional hunting grounds. In 1992, declassified documents revealed the presence of these wastes. The community was calling for clean up of the contaminated site, and Honor the Earth supported the community’s efforts.

Four other Midwest groups including the White Earth Land Recovery Project, the Midwest Treaty Network, the Indigenous Women's Network and Anishinaabe Niiji received funds and exposure from the tour.

Following the tour, the Indigo Girls committed a month of their time to benefit concerts. This commitment marked the beginning of Honor the Earth as an ongoing organization.
