We had a special guest, Glenn Morris, at the press event. Glenn is from the Colorado A.I.M. Coordinating Committee and Chair of the Political Science Department at University of Colorado, Boulder. He talked a lot about the Denver Spy Files case; a case in which the Denver Police Department have been keeping files on protestors like the American Friends Service Committee, and sometimes even labeling people as "criminal extremist". They have also been sharing these files with 12 other jurisdictions including the F.B.I. Colorado A.I.M. is not a plaintiff in the main case, but is planning to make a case of their own. Glenn pointed out the intersection between First Amendment rights and the work we are doing as activists. Winona gave an overview of the tour and then we fielded some questions. It was a pretty low-key press conference. One reporter got a little provocative and wanted to talk about the Animas La Plata project in Durango, but Winona didn't want to be baited into a discussion that would force her to talk about another tribe's controversies and where she might be taken out of context by the media. After the press conference, we drove to Greeley. The show was sponsored by the Native Students and the GLBT groups. We had an excellent turn out. We got to visit the Native Student Center where they fed us and we met with some of the school activists. This school is home to the Fighting Whites-a mascot that was created to bring attention to the problem of racist mascots across the country. They have raised $100,000 for minority scholarships through the sales of Fighting Whites t-shirts. The show was a little chaotic in a good way, a lot of energy in the room. The Q and A was one of the best we had, with some progress made on a few issues. According to one student, the UNC Board of Trustees was opposed to the college buying wind energy. We are going to sign onto a letter asking the school to buy green energy. Also, we hope to ally with the students to get this kind of action going on at other colleges. The students are also trying to keep up a protest against Styrofoam in the cafeterias-we had a brain storming session around this. Winona ended the evening with a sort of pep talk about action, it was the perfect way to wind up the tour. We drove to a Denver airport hotel after the show. As we were unpacking the bus, a stray dog appeared in the parking lot. Actually at closer inspection it looked like it was mostly wolf. We fed it for a while, but it would not come very close. It was very odd and seemed quite displaced, definitely more wild than domestic. It meant something, I don't know what, but it felt thoroughly mystical to me: the Wolf, as a teacher coming down out of the hills at its own expense, into industrial society, to show us something, to leaves us its blessing.
