It's (Honor the) Earth Day...
It's the 40th anniversary of Earth Day & on this day Honor the Earth celebrates its own beginnings as well.
Nearly 20 years ago, backstage at an Earth Day concert, Indigo Girls first met Winona LaDuke and together they committed to raise awareness and funds for grassroots Native environmental work.
We are still doing this work today.
Winona, our Executive Director, was asked to write a short commentary about Earth Day for The Progressive Media Project. It has been widely picked up online including the Kansas City Star, Tri-City Herald, Idaho Statesman, Sacramento Bee, Lexington Herald-Leader, The Olympian, Miami Herald. You can read the full commentary right here, in our Newsroom.
As the 40th anniversary of Earth Day approached we also began to assess the current situation in Indian Country and discovered some interesting parallels between energy justice and institutionalized racism.
