Permit Hearing for Taiwanese Plastic Plant in Louisiana Turns into a Referendum on Environmental Racism

About 40 people attended the December 6 hearing in Valcherie, an unincorporated community in St. James Parish, Louisiana, located 50 miles west of New Orleans. It was held by representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Enbridge’s Insurance Agreement puts Minnesota at Huge Risk

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will likely approve Enbridge’s insurance plan to pay for a worst-case spill scenario for the proposed Line 3 Project. This plan would be available to help pay for the damages to the State of Minnesota, tribes, and individuals. The proposed plan includes $940 million in insurance, with any additional cleanup costs paid by Enbridge. These additional costs above the $940 million would be passed on to consumers through a rate increase for shippers using their pipeline system.

Although Honor the Earth filed a motion in August that would allow the public access to the parts of Enbridge’s insurance policies related to oil spills, the public has not yet been allowed to see these policies.
