Dooda'
Desert Rock
DREP Draft Environmental Impact Statement PUBLIC HEARINGS
We, the people of Dooda' Desert Rock (DDR), are here in Window Rock on Wednesday,
July 25, 2007 at 8:00am to announce to Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley,
his administration, and the Navajo Nation Council Delegates
that they should be ashamed of themselves because of their support of the
proposed Desert Rock Energy Project. Over nine hearings thus far, communities
have spoken out in loud opposition to this proposed coal-fired power plant.
The Dooda' Desert Rock organization will gather at the Navajo Nation Museum
for a PRESS CONFERENCE AT 8:00am to discuss this contradiction in our tribal
representation and our ongoing opposition to the proposed Desert Rock Energy
Project. This press conference will precede the final Draft Environmental
Impact Statement hearing, which will commence at 10:00am at the same site.
President Shirley and Council Delegates must listen to the People sooner
or later. DDR has no plans to relocate and has requested the ear of the President
on many occasions. In fact, we are growing in strength and numbers as our
message reaches more people who care about our survival.
We believe that respect is something that must be earned and requires leadership
that reflects long-term investments in the Navajo people. We feel that President
Shirley and his administration, including VP Ben Shelley and
the majority of the council delegates, as well as Dine' Power Authority,
are disrespecting DDR by not listening to our concerns.
We know that the proponents of the DREP are going to do all they can to bring
their supporters to Window Rock to get them to comment in support of the
Desert Rock project, despite the evidence that there are multiple, grave
flaws in the DEIS.
We call for communities to continue to unite and oppose this horrible proposed
power plant.
Navajo people, please listen and stand with us against the DREP. We must
all wake up and realize that global warming is for REAL, and it is happening
in our communities right now. The proposed Desert Rock project will only
worsen the environmental and cultural impacts many of our people
are already
suffering.
