On the 40th anniversary of Earth Day we've picked 4 ways that you can make a difference starting right now.
1. Talk to your friends, family and colleagues about the movement for energy justice in Native America.
Knowledge is power and at Honor the Earth it is our mission to create an informed constituency of Native and non-Native supporters. Your outreach allows us to be a stronger voice for the Earth and for those not heard. We need you to stand with us on this Earth Day, and every day, to tell the truth about the impacts of American energy and environmental policy and practice on our Native communities and lifeways.
2. Find out where your energy is coming from.
Many people are concerned with where their clothes are made and where their food is grown but what about your power? If your electricity comes from coal or uranium, there’s a high likelihood the resources are mined on Indigenous lands or the power plant is poisoning Indigenous territories. Contact your utility and find out about the sources of energy you use.
3. Tell President Obama and Secretary Chu NO to new nukes, coal and oil.
The Obama Administration is rebooting the nuclear industry, financing “clean” coal research and opening our coastal water to offshore oil. Indigenous peoples are disproportionately impacted by this plan. It’s time to say NO to unsound and racist energy policy. Write or call Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and tell him you want a renewable future free of nuclear and fossil fuels! Email: [email protected] or phone: 1-202-586-5000 today.
4. Make an Earth Day gift today.
On this Earth Day, join with us and make a gift to invest in Indigenous peoples’ work to protect our Mother Earth. Your donation provides critical support to Native communities taking on the task of resisting big oil, coal and nuclear power and doing the work of building sustainable economies. Help us strengthen our communities from the ground up. Make a gift that truly honors the Earth. Please give generously today. You can make a secure donation online or send a check payable to: "Honor the Earth/Tides", 2104 Stevens Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55404. All contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
