Decolonize U: (Anti-)Ableism 101

For this training of Decolonize U, we will discuss ableism and disability, exploring how disability is defined, its shifting nature, and who gets to define it. We will examine the historical foundations of ableism, particularly in relation to settler colonialism, and its intersections with issues like land occupation, environmental discrimination, global imperialism, healthcare access, and immigration. We will conclude by outlining steps towards anti-ableism, including shifting value systems, collective action, inclusive language, and centering and prioritizing disabled people.
